Our latest news…{Potty Training Part 1}

It is about time I put a new post on this blog of mine!  I have been MIA…again.  I am starting to make a bad habit of that.  I have a lot of catching up to do for the month of January and I intend on doing so, but today I want to blog about life right now.  It is much more fun that way.  I want to brag about my little girl for a minute and tell you how proud I am of her.  She is growing up so much and is officially a big girl.  Yesterday we threw the diapers away and pulled out the big girl panties.  Overall, Ady rocked potty training!  Our morning got off to a rocky start.  She had me sweating, biting my finger nails and crying (fake crying, it seemed to do the trick for her) and wondering what the heck I was thinking.  I will share all of the details soon because you know on a day like this there are A LOT of details.  I will also share my method for potty training in ONE DAY, so stay tuned!  You don’t want to miss it.  For now, here is what our day looked like.

Photobucket

We stayed close to the toilet for a good majority of the day.  Doesn’t that sound like fun?

There was a lot of cheering and high fiving from me.

Of course there was a lot of hand washing.  I think this was one of her favorite parts.  She had so much fun playing in the water that she decided to bring her mermaids down and give them a bath.  I wish I would have taken a picture of that.

Photobucket

I couldn’t get enough of this cute panty wearing bum.  It is a dream come true!  Especially knowing that THIS IS IT.

No, I am not sad about that.

Photobucket

She made a lot of phone calls to share the good news.

Photobucket

We ended the day celebrating outside.  She was one happy little girl.  So was her mommy.

Photobucket

Phew!  What a day!

Photobucket

I will share the rest tomorrow.

Be back soon!

  4. yay Ady! I'm glad you (and your Mommy) survived! You're doing great! Now can you come teach your boyfriend?

  5. Curious...how old is your daughter? My son is 20 months and I don't know if that is too early.

  6. My daughter turned 2 in the middle of October. So she would have been 27 months when she was potty trained. You are the only one who knows your son and what to expect, but as far as age goes I would maybe wait a little while longer.

  7. If you could actually do this you should make it a business. My husband and I jokingly and then seriously said we would pay someone hundreds of $$$ if they could come over to our house in a day and potty train our son. It would save us a lot in diaper $$$. I think we have tried just about everything you have, we only have boys though, do you notice a difference between boys and girls for how easy potty training is?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Thanks for your comment Brooke! I don't think people could pay me enough to constantly potty train kids! :) Hahaha....

In answer to your question, with my own children I have noticed a small difference between boys and girls. The potty training day is pretty much the same, but after, in the weeks to come, my boys have had more accidents than the girls. They get a little lazy and distracted. I have had to remind them more often. I think that is pretty typical of boys in general. Boys aren't as detailed oriented as girls are.

  15. I agree, this method is great! It's from the 1974 book "Toilet training in Less Than A Day" step by step, if you were interested in where your friend's mom probably found it. Your pics are WAY better than their drawings though! I altered it a little and just used it with my son after reading the book. We didn't hide away in a room, it would have been a day of tantrums and freakouts if he had to repeat that much so we minimized distractions and just stayed on our usual routing with the MOST PRAISE EVER for his successes. So far, going great and WAY faster than random scheduled potty sits. Congrats!

  16. Thank you for sharing the name of the book. It's nice to have a reference for it originally came from.

  17. Oh my gosh, THANK YOU so much for this! I tried it yesterday with my son who will be 3yrs in June! I thought I had tried everything. This was so intense and we spend most the day in the restroom but it was so worth it bc it worked! He only had one accident yesterday. I can't thank you enough!
One question: I know this is only day 2 for us but when does it go from me telling him that it's time to go potty to him telling me he needs to go??

    ReplyDelete
  18. Congratulations Audrey! I am so happy for you and your son. It's a long day, but it is worth it for sure. I would say by the end of day 2, day 3 for sure he should be telling you when he needs to go. Try backing off on the timer and see what happens. Just go from there. :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. So funny, shortly after I left you a comment my son told me he had to go and has told me a few times since then! Thanks again! :)

  20. How on earth do I get my son to poop on the potty? He'll go #1 all day long, but refuses to go #2 in the potty. He is now 3 years old.

    ReplyDelete
  21. You said that you run back to the potty ten times when the doll has an accident. Am I understanding that right, that you run back and forth from the accident site to the potty ten times in a row? Or is it ten times in day? (Now that I type that it seems like ten times in one day is more reasonable.)

    ReplyDelete
  22. so the fun begins tomrrow. 2 questions. Did you have water proof pants over the training pants, and nap time?? I know he is gonna go...is that part of the training process. My son is still in a crib so I dunno how is gonna tell me he needs to go at night...and he is only 20 months....

  23. Hi I am a new follower I found your blog through Pinterest and seeing the title for this DEFINITELY caught my eye. I have a just over 2 year old and I had been looking into potty training options and browsing the web and everything seemed so typical and like such a slow process. Then when I just playing around on Pinterest this popped up so I read it over and over again than read it to my husband, then we discussed how we're and our son is ready. The next day we went shopping got ALL of our fun goodies and followed your blog to a T. It was very intense day 1 literally shocked me how much work it was BUT we are now on day 12 and he is doing fabulous!!!! He is even dry through the nights for 4 nights in a row and we're on 5 days with NO accidents! I cannot THANK YOU ENOUGH for sharing this blog and your story it is amazing and I am now sending tons of people over and telling them make sure you do EXACTLY what she says!!! Thank you again. ~Corene

  24. I am a working 8-5, M-F mommy. What do you suggest in this case? SHould I do it on a Saturdaay and reinforce on Sunday and then send her to daycare with lots of panties and shorts? The daycare takes them potty every hour.

  25. I started potty traing my son at 18 months and by 24 mnth he was going by himself. But I did mine differently. I just explained to him that pee and poop went in the potty. I let him run around naked for a day so he could understand Wat it was to pee on your self would get you dirty. And every time I went to use the rest room I put him on his potty. He got it right away by 24 months I didn't have to buy any traing pants. He lets me know when he wants to go Wat he needs to do and he also wakes up in the middle of the night too.

  26. This is amazing, how old do you start your boys? My son is two and interested in the potty. I just need to decide if I'm on board or not... I have a 1 year old also. Things can get crazy. Any advice?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Courtney - It sounds like your son is feeling ready and at the right age. You should go for it! You don't want to miss this window. As far as your one year old goes. I know that life is crazy with very young children. I completely understand this! Your one year old is only going to get busier and life is only going to get crazier. Take the plunge! You will be glad you got this huge milestone over with. It is very important for the day to be about you and the son you are potty training, so find somewhere for your one year old to go for the day and have his own kind of fun. I do not reccommend potty training him with your other child home. It will be much harder to be successful. Good luck!

  28. I agree--awesome method! I've also used it with all four of my children, 2 girls and 2 boys. I did them all the week they turned 2.

I always tell my friends it feels like it isn't working the first day, but everything really kicks in mid way the second day.

The day is horrific ;) but so worth it in the end.

I do have the book "Toilet training in Less Than A Day", but didn't really read the whole thing. I just skimmed through for the details which you kindly posted here.

Your daughter is so stinkin' cute and your pictures are gorgeous.

One last thing--I'm not sure I read your post closely enough. Did you advise everyone to buy panties/underwear that are too big for the kiddos? I found that that really helps them in being able to pull on and off their underwear.

Another last thing--we made a big show out of throwing away the diapers so they had it in their heads that this was really the end. (I later fetched them out when they weren't looking to give away.)

Guess I'm not finished yet. I bought Pull-Ups for my children to wear during naps (nap during training day is the best one ever because it gives you a break) and when we left the house (in the first week after training.) We called them "Bye bye undies" and "nighttime undies." I'm not sure they were tricked, but it worked for me.

    Good luck, everyone. :)

  32. AMAZING! I saw this weeks ago when we were in the process of moving and was unable to do it but now that we are settled in we decided to give it a try. TOTALLY WORTH IT. After a year of not trying again after a triple success and doing this quitting diapers COLD TURKEY today my 2-weeks-away-from-being-3 year old daughter has had 3 accidents and all of which were this morning before noon. It is now 8 PM and she has had no accidents since then and has had 7 successes!!! Each time she told us she had to go, pulled her big girl undies down herself, got the toilet paper or wipes herself, wiped herself, and washed her hands ALL ON HER OWN!! So proud of my baby girl and I now SWEAR BY THIS METHOD!!!!!!

  33. We started yesterday and have had great success. My son is 3 1/2 so probably could have done it sooner, but I haven't really had the opportunity to focus. this week, my husband and the other five kids that still live at home, went away to youth camp. Perfect! Alone with my darling son!
Had one accident all day yesterday. stayed dry all night! He's doing awesome today! I'm so excited to be done with diapers ( at least for every day...grand babies still come to visit!)
Thanks for posting this. I read a lot of posts and blogs but yours is the one I stuck with. We are very happy!

  36. My friends son is 4 and he goes to the potty for #1 but wont do #2 unless the deed is done in his underwear or diapers, strange I know. Do you have any suggestions for this type of situation?

  38. So how do you wean them off of the candy rewards once you start rewarding them with the candy?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Aimee - I didn't have to wean them off the treats. All four of them were excited enough to be so grown up and learn somthing new they didn't even ask for treats after the first day.

It really isn't about the treats. It's about a day of teaching and having fun one on one with the child. Every kid likes a little incentive to get them going, whatever that is, and in my case one of the incentives was a treat.

  40. Thanks for all the tips & advice Krysta!! I had no idea how to start toilet training & just stubbled across your blog. I was very nervous about starting but I'm so glad I did. The 1st day was sooo hard & I wondered what I had started. I even contemplated putting my lil boy in nappies at night thinking it'd never work. But my husband was really positive saying that if you thought we shouldn't use nappies at night then we shouldn't. The next day was 100 times easier (I think I made him drink too much on the 1st day :)) & within a week he was trained. Within 2 weeks he'd had no accidents (not even at child care). I'm so proud of my lil boy! Night time is a bit hit & miss but know that can take a while. We are struggling with 1 thing though. He won't do poos on the toilet & hangs on for days. Then he wets himself lots cos he's so busy trying to not poo. He's done 1 poo on the toilet after hours of crying & carrying on & we gave lots of lollies & he was so happy with himself. But now we're back to square 1 & he won't do a poo on the toilet. I think his poos are quite acidic too which makes them hurt when they come out. Any ideas?
As for all these people complaining about the lollies & soft drink. I don't like giving my son sweets but it's for one or two days. You need to get some perspective & relax a little or just don't give it to your children :) it's pretty simple.

    1. Annabella - thank you so much for your kind words and support! I'm glad you stayed strong and stuck it out. It is nice that you have a supportive husband! That helps tremendously!

As far as pooping in the potty goes...that can be a scary and difficult thing for children to grasp. I don't have any personal experiences with that one. We didn't have that problem so I don't have any tried and true suggestions for you. Other mothers commented about that in Potty Training Part 2. You can read through those comments and hopefully find some helpful advise. Maybe ask his pediatrician? Whatever you decide to do, just remember to be encouraging and patient. It will come with time.

  41. Thanks Krysta. Well just as I had no idea what to do with the poo situation ... we had a break through! I tempted him the whole day with the treat of a chocolate if he did a poo on the toilet. Finally at about 7:30pm (!!) he was busting & I encouraged him to sit on the toilet & try 'pushing'. He accidentally did a poo & the relief on his face was priceless :) He didn't want to get off the toilet after that & sat there for another 20mins trying to poo. We did our usual 'go crazy with excitement' routine afterwards & he was so happy with himself. Today is the 4th day in a row that he's done a poo.
Just one last question, how long before your kids were toilet trained at night? We've been doing this for about a month now & he's still wetting the bed. He's also getting grumpier & harder to wake before we go to bed. Should we put him back in nappies at night and try again in a few months?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yaaaay! Good for him! That is how it usually happens...just a little extra patience and time and it usually works itself out on its own.

Are you making sure he isn't drink very much for a couple of hours before bed? And he isn't going to bed with a sippy cup? He might just be a heavy sleeper. I have one son like that. Pretty much all of my children were night trained with in two weeks. My son who is a heavy sleeper still has an accident about once a month. He will grow out of it with time. You have to decide what will work for you...I never wanted to do pull ups or diapers at night. I didn't want to buy them and I wanted to train only one time so I stuck with it but that is a personal battle. Stick with it until you absolutely can't anymore.

      Good luck and good job!

  45. I just wanted to say THANK YOU for posting this series and in such wonderful detail. My two children are 8 years apart and I have had nightmares about potty training my second kiddo after the fiasco of my first attempt, so many years ago. I had no idea what I was doing and was quite nervous about potty training this time. My little guy accomplished it without a hitch and is feeling so proud of himself. I can not thank you enough for putting this out there. I ALMOST didn't do the baby doll part because my kiddo wants nothing to do with dolls. I though it might be a distraction, but he thought it was HILARIOUS and, man, when the baby got candy! Well, he was sold. Thanks again and many blessings to you and your adorable family. God bless.

  48. I am in the mists of potty training my 2 and 1/2 year old daughter. She goes to a playgroup from 8 to 1 and most of the other toddlers are toilet trained already (she is one of the younger ones). She has been practically begging to be toilet trained....doing things like pulling off her diaper and asking to sit on the toilet. So I gave in, and it was failing so I put her back in diapers. 2 months later, I decided to try again. It had been 6 days and the number of accidents per day were increasing from 2 to 4. I needed some inspiration, so I visited pinterest! And I came across your blog post! Firstly it was helpful for me to simply have a model to work from- every 15 minutes on the toilet! And I gave her sweets that I would have never allowed! Plus we made a chart and called her daddy by each successful bathroom trip. It was great. The thing is that it didn't stick. Today she went back to only having 2 accidents per day, instead of 4, but I am terrified that she is going to go back to 4! I refuse to put her back in diapers, only because this process is too dirty and messy to do it a 3rd time!
Any advice or inspiration or motivation. I really wish these accidents would not get me so aggravated, but they do!
    Thanks!
