A Day in the Life of Ady

Ady loves “Me and You Days”.

This is how she describes school days for us.

She asks me at night when I tuck her into bed, “Is tomorrow going to be a Me and You Day, Mom?”

“Why yes it is Miss Ady.  Just Me and You sister.”

I Instagramed these photos a little while back.

Our day started out normal.

Me - working around the house in the morning.

Ady - watching her favorite shows.

Then we typically get ready for the day, have lunch and  move  on to whatever activity we are doing that day (this used to be naptime.  Sometimes I really miss naptime).

We chose to make Triple Chocolate Chip Cookies that day. Yummmmmy!

(Photo taken with iPhone)

She is my helper in the kitchen and knows the routine.

Aprons and music and we are set!

Well, of course after a little while she lost interest and went in the backyard to play.

In the sandbox.

I have a love/hate relationship with the sandbox.

I love that it is hours of  entertainment.

I hate that within minutes it can get to an out of control level of messy.

Kind of like this.

Well, this time it wasn’t as bad as that (she has learned) but it did involve sand and water and the trampoline.

She decided to clean herself off from the sandbox by attaching the sprayer to the hose and then putting it on the trampoline.

When I notice that all of this happened (we are talking a couple of minutes) I find her on the trampoline jumping in muddy clothes.

Really Ady???

No photos of that.  I wasn’t quite sure how I felt about the incident and if it was worth burning cookies over.  :)

I decided I needed to side with my cookies for the moment.

I did however, change her clothes and let her finish out the afternoon in her swimsuit on the trampoline.

I was proud of her for knowing what she wanted and how to go about making it happen.

Ady's Day - 2013-2 - edit cr

She knew where to find the sprayer and how to attach it to the hose all by herself.

She was not going to let me ruin her fun or give me the chance to say “No. Not now Ady.”

Untitled-2

And I am glad she didn’t because I loved watching her have her own kind of fun.

Ady's Day - 2013-17 - edit cr

She keeps asking me when will she get to be 5 years old.

Ady's Day - 2013-22 - edit cr

I tell her she only gets to be 3 once and to love every minute of it.

 Ady's Day - 2013-28 - edit cr

Sometimes she takes me a little too literal.

Ady's Day - 2013-30 - edit cr

She had waaaaaay too much fun in the bathtub after that.

Untitled-3

See what I mean?

Water ALL OVER the floor.

It was bad.

The above photos are how I found it after she had tried to clean it up on her own.

And this is how I found her.

Untitled-1

And that my friends is a day in the life of Ady.

We live and learn together every. single. day.

Starting tomorrow I will be living and learning with all 4 of my kids every. single. day.

It’s

SUMMER TIME!!!

Potty Training Part 2

Click here for Potty Training Part 1Hi!  I am back to share how I have potty trained all 4 of my children.   I was lucky enough to have a neighbor and good friend in Utah share this method with me just before I started potty training Kaylee.  That was over 8 years ago.  I will be forever grateful to her for that.  As a new mother who didn’t have a clue where to start and really hadn’t given it much thought; she gave me the tools I needed to be successful.  I was sold when she told me her own mother potty trained all of her children this way.  She happened to have10 children.  She also potty trained her own (4 at the time) children the same way her mother did.  Double sold.  I thought it was definitely worth a try.   Maybe this will help you too.  Because of that, I share this info. with everyone.

Potty Training in one day

Supplies to get

-A lot of candy, snacks, kool aid, juice, sweet and salty things

-Underwear (heavy ones for first couple of days and normal ones)

-Plastic cover pants to go over the underwear for naps and night

-An apron for you to wear with pockets to put treats in (instant rewards for going in potty)

-Potty seat for toilet, stool and portable potty chair (so they can decide which to use)

-Poster board (you need to make a calling chart.  Something where they can see to choose who to call when they go potty, photos helpful) * I have used scrapbook pages before just to save on prep time.  Confession - I didn’t do that this time.  I did not have time.  Instead I made a list for myself of who to call and then Ady decided by the names I said.  If she wasn’t my fourth one, I would have gone all out.  That’s my excuse anyway. :)

-Baby wet doll – *I had a hard time finding one of these.  I had one with the first two, but with Drew and Ady I just used one of the dolls we had around the house.  The point is to have the doll go pee pee in the potty to get your child excited.  I just sneaked a medicine dropper full of water behind the doll and pretended she peed.  It worked fine.  It’s up to you.

-Something to clean the “oopsies” with. * There is probably a better way, but I use an ammonia and water mixture in a squirt bottle and Febreeze when it is on my rugs (that can’t be washed) or carpet.  Or you could just hang out on the tile for the majority of the day.  That is a safe place!  You will need something to clean up the carpet anyway.  It’s bound to happen.

-Don’t forget about treats for you.  This is important.  You are going to NEED them!  Coke, chocolate and potato chips are always on my list.

Very IMPORTANT rules not to break

-It should be just you and the child you are potty training ALL day - no interruptions  *I understand when you have multiple children it can sometimes be hard to find a place for them go, especially when they are not school age.   See if a family member or good friend can take them.  Maybe your husband can take the day off work or plan it for when he has the day off.  I have done all of those. I can not tell you enough how important it is to have it be JUST the two of you all day.  And when I say all day, I mean until dinner time or later.  Plan on pizza for dinner!  (My friend Sara brought us dinner.  I was very lucky).  Not only is it easier to teach your child when you are one on one with out interruptions, but they feel so important when they have you all to themselves.  Especially on a day like this.  Ok, I’m off my soap box.  Moving on.

-Do not answer the phone or the door.  This is not the day to chat on the phone or text. I always tell the people I communicate with regularly that I will be unreachable.  There will be moments of boredom, but I promise you, the second you get into a conversation or get lost in texting you will have a pee or poop mess to clean up for sure.  It’s all about staying focused and not being interrupted.

How it Works

Start your day like normal.   Feed him/her a good breakfast since it will pretty much be junk the rest of the day.  (I will explain why in a bit)  After breakfast, as soon as everyone is out of the house (and maybe after you have at least showered.  You will be glad you did because once you start there will be no time for you.) start by playing with the baby wet doll. Say “Look! She has big girl (big boy) underwear on! You can wear big boy underwear too! Let’s go put yours on! When he puts his on, have him wear just his underwear and a shirt all day.  No shorts or pants.  It’s just easier that way and one less thing for you to wash.  Then go back to playing with the doll again. All of the sudden the doll goes pee pee on the potty! “Oh my gosh! Did you hear that!? We are so proud of her! She gets to have a special treat!” Make sure that you have your apron on with “special” treats.  Ones that are only for when he goes in the potty.  Not for snack time. Give the doll a treat and say, “You can have a special treat if you go pee  pee in the potty too.” Have him sit on the potty and try right then. If he goes potty then get SO EXCITED!!  He gets a special treat and then gets to choose someone’s picture from the calling chart to call and tell about going potty on the big boy potty.

This is pretty much what your day consists of:

1. Go to the kitchen, start pumping him/her full of snacks (sweet and salty) and juice and water. Lots of liquid and food to keep him/her drinking.  This step is very important.  You want them to be drinking constantly, at first anyway.  The sweet and salty snacks will make them want to drink, which is going to make them have to pee and that is what you want.  Then you will have plenty of opportunities to teach them to use the potty.  Remember this is potty training in ONE day, so it’s a good thing to be running to the bathroom every 15 min.

My friend Tami, who has the same love for Coke as I do, dropped me by my daily drink.  It never tasted so good!  I usually don’t ever share my drink.  It’s MY thing.  Hands off kiddos…or you just might die. ;)  Today was a little different.  Ady always begs for sips of my soda.  Today I shared a little bit with her.  I happily let her sip through my straw knowing it would go straight through her and come out the other end in no time.

Photobucket

2.  Set the timer for 15 minutes. In that first 15 minutes, start to play with the doll again and this time make the doll have an accident. When she  has an accident run with her from the spot of the accident to the potty saying “No pee pee on the floor pee pee on the potty!”, really fast 10 times back and forth.  Each time saying that and pulling her underwear down and setting her on the potty. Do that same thing with your child when they have an accident.  They might start to laugh and think it’s a joke, but don’t give up.  Before you know it they’ll be saying it too. Make sure and do that every time there is an accident, even if you really don’t feel like it anymore. It’s a very important step in the teaching process.

3.  When he/she isn’t eating, or running back and forth to the potty, stick to reading books or playing cars, Legos or some other toy or game.  No T.V. or movies.  They get too involved in that and lose interest in the day.  Stick to activities that can be easily interrupted.  Don’t let him/her go outside.  They’ll lose all interest!

We stuck to Legos most of the day.  I think she stuck to one thing because she loved that I was doing it with her.

Photobucket

4.  Eat a normal lunch and put your child down for a nap at a normal time.

*As far as your day goes, the main things are eating lots of things to make them drink.  Going potty every 15 minutes.  (Don’t forget to set the timer).  Reward them instantly when they are successful.

Ady loved pulling treats out of my apron.

Photobucket

Photobucket

She also loved talking on the phone.

Photobucket

*Don’t forget to run back and forth 10 times when there is an accident.  I really think this is a vital part of the learning process.  I have seen the lightbulb go on during this step with every single one of my children.

Tips and Suggestions

-Stay overly excited!

-Try not to get frustrated… you can do anything for a day and it’s completely worth it!

-As far as the timer goes, sometimes it seems like they have an accident a couple of minutes before the timer goes off.  It is the worst when you miss it like that!  It makes me want to pull my hair out.  If that happens adjust your time and remember to follow your instincts! If the timer goes off after 15 min and they still don’t need to go potty (even after they tried sitting on the potty) then it is pretty safe to say that if you set the timer for another 15 min. they are going to pee on the floor.  Instead, set the timer for 5 min. intervals until you catch them being successful on the potty.  Then start it over at 15 min. again.

-I find that we end up sitting on the potty for awhile waiting for something to happen.  If it’s been 15 min. I want them to sit on the potty and wait.  I can’t stand missing it and then having to deal with an accident because we weren’t patient enough.  I will sit in front of them and sing songs or play some kind of hand game to keep them entertained.  (like itsy bitsy spider, this little piggy, pat a cake, pat a cake or whatever else you can think of).

-It seems like after lunch or nap time they lose interest a little.  Save some tricks for when that happens.  Make up a potty game or song. Instead of a timer on a microwave use one that rings or sounds different. If he/she gets tired of the real potty put out the portable one.  Brainstorm about some things like that.

-This is pretty much common sense, but when your child has an accident make sure and say “EWWW! Pee pee is so stinky!  We don’t like to clean up accidents!” not “You stink!, Your pee smells so bad! Or Your Gross!”

-Make sure and have some kind of plastic cover over the mattress under the bottom sheet in case there is an accident at night.  You could buy a water proof mattress cover.

-Don’t go back to diapers.  Not even pull- ups at night. Once you start just keep going.  No matter how hard it is!  They’ll  get the hang of it.  They need to know that he/she is  a big boy/girl and they don’t use diapers anymore.  This is up to you and all children are a little different when it comes to night time.  I personally feel like they have to learn some time and I am all about diving in and not looking back.  Plus Pull-Ups pull the moisture away from them so they aren’t as aware of an accident.

-Consistency, consistency, consistency!!!!  There is really nothing else that needs to be said about that one.

*So you train in a day and then you have to reinforce for about a week. I’m not going to sugar coat it and tell you  that after ONE day they are fully potty trained.  There will still be accidents here and there.  They are going to get distracted or lazy.  It happens.  Don’t expect them to all of a sudden go potty all by themselves every single time.  You are still going to have to do some reminding.  Did I already mention being consistent?  I will assure you that the majority of the teaching happens on the first day.  You will see it click sometime during that day.  However, do not expect to go back to your normal routine the next day.  The second day was worse for us then the first day.  I always forget that until I am experiencing the second day, but it has been that way for us each time.  It’s not quite as exciting for them on the second day and you are ready to have a “normal” day.  The third day is better.  It clicks for them again and you are back on track.  You probably won’t want to leave the house for the first week, unless it’s a very quick errand and you  take a change of clothes. (Keep the change of clothes with you for longer than that) Always have them go potty right before you leave the house. You will probably have to ask  every 30 minutes or so for the next couple of days if they need to go potty.  If the answer is no, you might need to be a little persistent and just get them to “try” every so often. It’s a busy, tiring week (you might even wish for diapers again), but it’s all worth it when you can tell it has finally clicked! Don’t forget to have them stop drinking at least an hour before bed and don’t let them go to bed with a sippy cup until there are no more accidents at night. We always wake our kids up to try before we go to bed.

That’s a rap for the big potty training post. Phew!  Thanks for hanging in there with me.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!  You can do it!

*  Questions answered in the comments. Please look through the comments for answers to your questions first.  I can not answer every question, especially if I already have.  I hope you understand.  Thank you for your interest in this post.  I am thrilled that I can share something that is helping so many of you.

The #1 most asked question is “What age is best to potty train?”

My answer is 2 – 2 1/2.  I usually start shortly after they have their second birthday.  I do not go past 2 1/2.  The  closer they are to 3, the harder it is.  They tend to get more stubborn and set in their ways and they care less about losing the diapers.  Around their second birthday they are so excited to grow up and be big like “so and so” is.  You are able to feed off of their own excitement and encourage them to take the next big step.

Our latest news…{Potty Training Part 1}

It is about time I put a new post on this blog of mine!  I have been MIA…again.  I am starting to make a bad habit of that.  I have a lot of catching up to do for the month of January and I intend on doing so, but today I want to blog about life right now.  It is much more fun that way.  I want to brag about my little girl for a minute and tell you how proud I am of her.  She is growing up so much and is officially a big girl.  Yesterday we threw the diapers away and pulled out the big girl panties.  Overall, Ady rocked potty training!  Our morning got off to a rocky start.  She had me sweating, biting my finger nails and crying (fake crying, it seemed to do the trick for her) and wondering what the heck I was thinking.  I will share all of the details soon because you know on a day like this there are A LOT of details.  I will also share my method for potty training in ONE DAY, so stay tuned!  You don’t want to miss it.  For now, here is what our day looked like.

Photobucket

We stayed close to the toilet for a good majority of the day.  Doesn’t that sound like fun?

There was a lot of cheering and high fiving from me.

Of course there was a lot of hand washing.  I think this was one of her favorite parts.  She had so much fun playing in the water that she decided to bring her mermaids down and give them a bath.  I wish I would have taken a picture of that.

Photobucket

I couldn’t get enough of this cute panty wearing bum.  It is a dream come true!  Especially knowing that THIS IS IT.

No, I am not sad about that.

Photobucket

She made a lot of phone calls to share the good news.

Photobucket

We ended the day celebrating outside.  She was one happy little girl.  So was her mommy.

Photobucket

Phew!  What a day!

Photobucket

I will share the rest tomorrow.

Be back soon!

Summer Prep – Part 4

 Idea Jars

Idea jars are going to be my secret mommy weapon this summer.  One of those things you just happen to pull out of nowhere in a split second.  My kids will either think I am completely awesome or they will know I’ve had it and they better get ready to work.  The great thing is…it’s up to them.

Ideas - 1

2 jars – one if they are being nice and one if they are being naughty.

I don’t know about your house, but at ours we have sibling squabbles, rowdy play, arguing and lots of deafness going on.  My children tend to not hear me a lot of the time.  When quiet time isn’t working and free play is creating havoc, I will pull out my jars for quick thinking.

First I have to decide which jar to use.  If they are on my naughty list, which means they have had plenty of chances to redeem themselves and this is the last straw, then they each have to choose a slip from the naughty jar.

Here are a few examples of what they might draw:

Take out the garbage's

Clean your jammy drawer

Windex the back door

Clean the garage

Straighten the house

Dump the recycle

Clean the door knobs

If they are behaving well and just need a little help getting started on an activity during free play or… I’m feeling really nice and generous that day, then they get to choose from the nice jar.  Super Kid gets to choose 1 and all 3 of them do that 1 activity.  We have to simplify.

Here are a few examples of what they might draw:

Make brownies – we always have a box mix in our panty

Story time – each takes a turn reading to each other (like at the library)

Board Games

Bubbles outside

Play Leap Frog

Wii Sing It or Bowling

Play Telephone

Movie and Popcorn

Make a snow cone – eat it outside

Give back and foot rubs

Side walk chalk

Cut out magazines

Count the commercials on your TV show

Spin the bottle – you set up books in a circle with a water bottle in the middle.  Spin it and read the book it lands on.

Color a picture for mommy – it has to be super pretty (which means take your time)

It  is really up to them which jar I choose.  I want them to have a lot of fun this summer.  They have plenty of opportunities to do fun things.   I’m hoping that this gives them an incentive to listen and behave.  If not, I’m going to have a clean house!  Sounds like a win, win to me. :)

Check back tomorrow for my last summer post.

Random Wednesday

Ten random happenings in my world these days. (no particular order)

1.  I am trying really hard to go to bed on time (11:30) but it just doesn’t happen.  1:00 is normal and has been for awhile.  That is not a good thing.

2.  Ady says mama…melt my heart!

3.  I have to give a talk on Sunday in Sacrament Meeting.  My topic is on being Instruments in the Hands of God.

4.  I have been bitten by the organizing bug!  I am dying to tear my closets and cupboards apart before school is out and the kids are home for the summer.

5. Being over 30 years old is starting to catch up to me.  I am switching to Diet Coke or no Coke at all.  I hate that I have to do that!  I am trying to watch what I eat a little more and I need to start exercising.  Oh yeah…and go to sleep earlier.

6.  We are looking forward to a visit from our Arkansas friends (family) this weekend.  Can’t wait!!

7.  I am struggling with Drew right now…disciplining that is.  He cries over everything and gets mad over everything.  Nothing seems to be just right.  I do love tokens though and would highly recommend this to anyone.

8.  It is this time of year again.

Jake Kaylee

We are on our third week of daily swim practice for the swim team.  All is well.  Kaylee and Jake are loving it and doing awesome!  Kaylee is going to start competing in the butterfly.

9.  When swim season comes it means this is what my laundry room looks like everyday and will until summer is over.

Suits

(Except add 3 more suits and 3 more towels.)

10.  It also means lots of ponytails for me.  It means Ady gets a bottle once a day or I feed her in the car.  It means super easy dinners.  It means hanging out with neighborhood friends.  It means I finally need to get smart and invest in one of those hand held fans!

Ady’s mobile is done!!

This weekend I finished Ady’s mobile.  I am getting there with my list.  Wahoo!  I have been wanting to get her mobile done since she was born…uuummmm 6 months ago today. :)  I bought these little birdies at Hob Lob during Christmas for $1.00 each.  I knew I wanted to use them for her mobile in one way or another.  They have been sitting in her closet ever since, waiting for the right inspiration.  Good ‘ol Pottery Barn pulled through for me.  I was browsing the magazine one day when it hit me.  Do you want to see it???

Krysta’s version of a mobile. (Pottery Barn Inspired)

A's Mobile   Mobile - 1

I love how simple and beautiful it is.

It really was easy to make too.  It’s a straw wreath (I don’t remember what size, but I used the smaller one of the two) with white ribbon wrapped around it to cover the straw.  (I wrapped it twice because you could still see the straw and I didn’t like that.)  Then I used the same kind of ribbon to attach to the wreath to hang it from.  They are attached with straight pins.  I cut two long lengths of ribbon.  One attached horizontally and the other attached vertically.  Then when you pull it together at the top you have two loops you can hang it from.  It is then tied together at the top in one  loopy knot and hung from a swag hook on the ceiling.  I don’t know if that makes any sense at all.  I should have taken a picture of that.  The thought crossed my mind, but it seemed kind of boring at the time.

Then I popped the tops of the flowers off the stems and hot glued them on the middle to top part of the wreath.  Actually, Kaylee popped them off for me.  She was a little helper.  Flowers

I loved randomly arranging them and coming up with my own design.

Then I painted  black dots on the birdies with the back of a small paint brush.  I had to give Ady something more interesting to stare at then plain white birds.

Birdie

Birdies - 2

I like how cute and whimsical they turned out.  Not a bad purchase for $1.oo each.  I’m glad I finally got to use them.  I tied each end of the sheer pink ribbon in a knot.  Then used straight pins to attach the ribbon to the top of the wreath and also to the bird.

                Here is Ady’s view.

Mobile-2

One of the things I really love about this mobile is that it can grow with her.  When she is done with her crib I can take the birds off of the wreath to give it a little more grown up feel and hang it above her big girl bed.  So many fun options!

And this is how we roll behind the scenes…

Ady and Daddy copy

Casey found this back pack on Craig’s List this weekend for $5.00.  It’s in perfect shape.  He’s been keeping his eye out for one for over a month now.  All of my Providence friends probably remember Casey out in our yard mowing the lawn with our children on his back like this.  Well, it’s too hot to do that here, but he can get his “Honey-Do’s” done this way!  He loves doing this!  He totes her around everywhere.  I love him for being such a great dad and for supporting me with all of my crazy notions because let’s admit it…Sometimes they can be pretty crazy.  And  he still loves me!

I am linking up to Just a Girls Show and Share Day, DIY Day at A Soft Place to Land and the Weekend Wrap Up Party at Tatertots and Jello.

I love this…

Spring in Houston

Even though Spring is short lived in Houston, I love it.  Maybe that’s why I love it so much.  We have a couple of months of perfect spring weather.  We enjoy and appreciate every second of it before the hot, humid stickiness of summer arrives.  My absolute favorite thing about spring in Houston is the wildflowers.  They are all over the place.  They are in full bloom for about a month.  It makes our normal every day trip into town a lot more enjoyable.  I had my camera in the car with me one day and decided to snap some pictures on our drive.

Scenic Drive

Isn’t it beautiful?  I find myself driving home different ways  just to get glimpses of every street during spring.  The wild flowers probably only have a couple more weeks left, if we’re lucky.

Then there are the Blue Bonnets.  You can’t live in Texas and not have a picture with the Blue Bonnets.  Well, we didn’t have one.  We have almost lived here for 3 years and still no blue bonnet picture.  Not that I really cared, but I was feeling ambitous, so we got the kids dressed up on Easter Sunday and headed out.

Blue Bonnets - 1 Blue Bonnets

These pictures look like we were having lots of fun, but it didn’t last very long.  You know how you take a picture and you look at it years later and think “that was a cute picture.” and then you remember the story behind the picture?  That is how it is for me with these Easter Sunday pictures.  I made every mistake in the book.

1. It was in the middle of the day and the sun was in full force.

2. EVERYBODY else had the same idea, so it was packed.  (It doesn’t look like it, but it was. I promise.)

3. It was getting hot.  We were all getting grumpy.

4. Casey was with me and he hates pictures.  We’ll just leave it at that.

5. And the worst mistake of all…I lost Jake’s glasses…in the blue bonnets.

Me.  The mom.  The one that everyone comes to when things get lost.  The one that can ALWAYS find the lost item.  The one who NEVER misplaces anything.  Me.

It was awful.  We didn’t realize it until we were almost home and Jake asked me for his glasses.  I had him take them off because they were getting a glare.  I must have set them down and forgotten them.  Casey and I looked at each other.  Let’s just say we both were not happy.  We went back to the blue bonnets in hopes of finding them.  I wasn’t hoping.  I KNEW I would find them.  That’s just how it goes.  Oh yeah, except for this time.

Do you need another look at this blue bonnet field?

Blue Bonnets -2

It’s huge and we were all over the place!  After searching high and low for 40 minutes I was defeated and close to tears.  I felt bad for Jake and I felt awful for making such a dumb mistake.  How careless and stupid was that?  Seriously.  Casey wasn’t ready to forgive my quite yet.  I really didn’t blame him, but then I reminded him of that time he lost our van in the parking lot at Disney World.  He didn’t have much to say after that!  That wasn’t funny then, but it sure is funny now.  Ha, ha, ha!

Musings about Motherhood…

I have been thinking a lot about time lately.  This isn’t a new thing actually but I feel like I finally figured it out.  I had an aha moment this week, thanks to my husband. Let me tell you how I used to view time.

If I have one pet peeve or one thing that I nag about (about myself, to myself) it’s time.  Where does the time go?  Why did I only get one thing marked off my list and add 4 new ones?  Why does Drew want a snack right after I just cleaned up the kitchen?  Why does it take Kaylee almost 1 hour everyday to do her homework?  Why does Ady sometimes nap for 1/2 an hour instead of one full hour?  Why does Jake hop around every morning when I do his hair instead of just standing still?  It would take me half the time to get his hair done.   Why do I not get to scrapbook or read or watch T.V.  as much as I used to?  Why does it take me until almost 9:00 to finish up my chores for the night?  Why do I say I’m going to run errands for 2 hours and it really takes me 3?  Those are just a few of the questions that run through my head every day.  I feel like time gets stolen from me some way or another each day.  I have a list of things I need to get done and on the list are usually a couple of things I want to get done.  I’m good to prioritize so my list of wants are most often put towards the end.  I never, ever, ever  get everything done on my list.  Who does, really?  That used to eat me up, day after day.  I used to be able to make a list and feel like I accomplished something  at the end of the day.  Now, hardly ever.  It honestly drove me crazy.  I am the kind of person who is driven by self motivation.  Self motivation that stems from a sense of accomplishment.  If I don’t feel like I have accomplished something recently than my motivation starts to dwindle and I am left wondering “What’s the point?  Why do I even bother?”

I have been complaining to Casey about time.  His time, my time, time as a family.  What has happened to it?  Where has it gone?  He feels the same time crunch and I know everyone else does too.  We live in busy times.  Times where it is so easy to add extra little things into our day.  Things that take up more time than we thought they would and probably aren’t as important as they might seem to be.  He has heard counsel from the Stake President recently on several different occasions about this same topic.  He shared it with me.  This one short sentence completely changed my view on time.

“We all have the same 24-hours in a day.  It’s what we do with our time that is important.”

That’s when it hit me.  Hearing that was like taking a blind fold from my eyes.  I could finally understand the value and importance of motherhood.  All of these years I knew how important motherhood was and I knew what I was doing was the right thing.  Heavenly Father wanted and needed me to be a mother.  I have been walking the steps of motherhood for almost 9 years now.  I know how hard and tedious it is.  Over time, I somehow changed my view on the day to day things and labeled them in my mind as unimportant.  “I am getting nothing accomplished.”  “I can’t get anything marked off my list.”  “All I do is wipe off counters and cook and do laundry.”  “Why can’t I ever get ahead?”  I had a completely selfish view and the selfishness made me truly think what I was doing every day was definitely not an accomplishment.  Getting my household chores done and having happy kids was not an accomplishment unless I got all of the extra things done each day too.  I was living in a dream land!  The reality of what I thought my day should be was so different than how it really was.  There is nothing greater than the call of motherhood.  I truly, truly, believe that now with all of my heart.  All of the tedious things that I do each day are soooooo important and sooooooo valuable.  There is nothing more important than taking care of Heavenly Father’s children.  I value my roll as a mother 100% now and view each day as an accomplishment.  Because it is.  It is from these tedious, trivial things that we make our children who they are.  And Heavenly Father values that.

Fun???

Does this look like fun?

hmmmm…in my eyes, NO!  In Drew’s eyes, Yes.

I was doing the laundry today and blogging.  You know…minding my own business.

Drew said, “I’m going to make a snow angel.”  I said, “OK.”

He was quiet, playing for a long time.  I was still minding my own business.  Just like he was.

He goes outside and gets a shovel from the sandbox.  He brings it inside the house.  I tell him to go wash it off in the sink.  Gasp!!  Normally I wouldn’t even let it come close to my back door.   You know, since outside toys are outside toys.  But today, I’m minding my own business.  Oh yeah, and so is he.

Who knows how much time had passed by, but I eventually walked through the living room to find his beautiful snow angel.

Why does he look mad at me

This picture doesn’t even do justice.  This was only half the mess.  Notice that the jar is halfway full?  It was pretty much empty when I found him.  I will give him credit though.  He was doing a nice job cleaning it up with the shovel from the sandbox.  I had plenty of time to think while I was helping him clean up this tedious mess.  After a while, I decided to get my camera and document.  This was an annoying thing, not really any fun, but this is our life.  As annoying as it is sometimes.  Especially considering I spent Ady’s naptime cleaning it all up.  Which happened to be a good thing.  She is get much more mobile and Drew is always playing right by her.  It would have been bad, bad, bad if she was around during this.

This little toy from Ikea has been hours of entertainment for my kids, so I salvaged most of them.  Eventually I said to heck with these little creatures.  The rest of them are now living in my vacuum.  Because I was done.

And then I had an ice cold Coke.  Because that makes everything better!

Yesterday…

We used to have Superman living with us.  Now we have a Ninja Turtle/Darth Vador/ Batman. His very own creation.

Untitled-1

Kaylee and Jake thought I lost my mind.

Jake: “Mom, you know we are going inside the store.”

Kaylee: “ He is not going like that to the Open House tonight!”

Yes, I knew we were going inside the store and no, he did not go like that to the school open house, but he did go like this to Sam’s Club and I really didn’t care.  I was on a mission and in my project mode.  I had Enrichment on my mind and this awesome frame we were going to make and I really needed my pictures…now.  So lucky for Drew I did not fight that battle.  I thought it was hilarious and refreshing instead.  Don’t you sometimes wish you could be a kid again and not have a care in the world?

I do.

Yesterday we both won.  He was happy in his costume and I was happy to get my pictures.

The End.
